About the Teachers

Sra. Ashby

I started exploring Spanish language and literature at the University of Iowa. My love of the language inspired me to study abroad in Cordoba, Argentina for one semester. After completing my BA in Spanish and International Business, I spent a summer in Salvador, Brazil learning more about South American culture and the Portuguese language. Committed to mastering the Spanish language, I decided to complete a Master’s degree in Spanish linguistics at the to University of Iowa and had the opportunity to teach undergraduate Spanish courses there for two years. I spent the 2010-2011 school year as a language and culture assistant in a bilingual elementary school in Madrid, Spain and returned to Minnesota on a mission to become a licensed teacher. I am so excited to continue teaching 6th grade at ISLA!
Sra. Devers

I began teaching over ten years ago and I feel fortunate to have been part of ISLA's community for the past seven.  One of the first questions I am usually asked by parents is, "Where did you learn to speak Spanish?"  I grew up in Minnesota and fell in love with language learning close to when I was a sixth grader myself.  Throughout high school and college, I traveled as much as I could.  After studying abroad in Valparaiso, Chile, I finished my bachelor's degree at the University of Wisconsin at River Falls and promptly returned to South America.  I began my teaching career in Chile, where I also met and married my husband.  Upon returning to Minnesota, I taught middle and high school Spanish for years before making a switch to elementary immersion education and completing a Master's degree in teaching.  From my first year as an educator, I have had a passion for the International Baccalaureate programs.  Now I am happy to teach at a school that integrates the IB PYP program with language immersion.  Also, I am grateful that my two children have the opportunity to be ISLA students!
